Updated November 2026
Everything on the exam, covered
Rad Registry Prep is built on the 2027 ARRT Radiography content specifications (for exams from March 1, 2027). The site covers every category and every subcategory in that outline: all 4 categories, all 33 topic areas inside their sections, and 37 subcategory quizzes in the Quiz Center.
That's 5,194 questions in all, including 848 built on real radiographs, 413 hot spots, 594 radiographic math problems and 123 image critique questions. The counts on this page are taken from the question bank itself, so they grow as questions are added.
The 2027 ARRT categories
The exam has 200 scored questions (plus 30 unscored pilot questions you can't tell apart, so treat every question as if it counts). They come from four categories:
| Category | Scored items | Site questions |
|---|---|---|
| Procedures | 72 (36%) | 2,020 |
| Image Production | 51 (25.5%) | 925 |
| Safety | 46 (23%) | 735 |
| Patient Care | 31 (15.5%) | 597 |
Procedures alone is more than a third of your score, and Procedures plus Image Production is over 60%, so those two deserve the most time. Every quiz, the Smart Study Coach and the readiness score use these same weights.
Every subcategory, and how many questions we have for it
Each category is split into sections and topic areas. The tables show the ARRT section with its scored items, each topic area with the share of items our mock exams give it, and how many questions the bank has for it. Under each table are the category's subcategory quizzes: tap one to practice just that topic.

Patient Care subcategory quizzes (7):
Quizzes open once you sign in. Your Smart Study Coach on the dashboard shows how many of the 37 subcategories you've practiced and which ones are untouched or thin (under 10 answers), each with a Practice button. Your Stats page maps all of them.
The method: complete coverage, biggest gains
Work through these steps in order, then keep cycling steps 3 to 9 until your readiness score turns green.
- Take the Smart Diagnostic. Start a Smart Diagnostic from the Smart Study Coach on your dashboard. Twenty questions sample every category so the coach can start mapping your strengths and weak spots.
- Follow the 30 Day Study Plan, every day. The 30 Day Study Plan gives you a short lesson with a diagram, a 15-question quiz, extra practice that reviews earlier days, and flashcards, about 40 minutes a day. Each day opens once the day before it is done, so it walks you through the whole outline.
- Read the micro lessons for your weak subcategories. When the coach names a focus area, open the matching micro lessons before you drill it: learn the concept first, then practice it.
- Drill with Smart Quizzes and subcategory quizzes. “Start my Smart Quiz” builds a custom quiz aimed at your weakest areas, starting with questions you missed. Any focus area name opens a Smart Quiz of just that area, and the Quiz Center has a quiz for every subcategory above. Use the coverage meter to reach the subcategories you haven't touched.
- Lock it in with flashcards. Short flashcard sessions keep facts, formulas and positioning criteria fresh between quizzes.
- See positioning and anatomy in 3D. Procedures is the biggest category. Practice the setup in the Radiography Positioning Simulator, check anatomy in the 3D Atlas and Anatomy Atlas, test yourself with the 3D Anatomy Quiz, and use the C-arm Trainer, Fluoro Room and Technique Simulator for surgery, fluoro and exposure questions.
- Take timed mock exams weighted to the blueprint. Every mock exam is drawn to the 2027 weights. Start with a 25 or 50, move up to a 100, and finish with full 200-question mocks once your coach says you're ready for one.
- Review every missed question. Walk through your misses on the missed questions page. Missed questions come back for a retry about a day (or two quizzes) later, then again after 3 and 7 days until they stick.
- Repeat with the coach. Check the full coach report each week: your weekly recap, pacing to your exam date, speed, confidence, image vs text questions, and whether you're ready for a mock. Then go back to step 3 with your new focus areas.
How much to study each day
- About 40 minutes a day covers one day of the 30 Day Study Plan. Do it every day: a steady daily habit beats a weekend cram.
- Add your exam date in Settings. The coach report then sets a daily question target, between 20 and 120 a day, sized to cover most of the questions you haven't seen yet before your exam, with extra time on your top focus area.
- Keep the review queue empty. Do any due retries first each day; they're the fastest points you can win back.
- Mock exams once your coach says you're ready for one, and two or three full-length, timed mocks in the last two weeks.
Reading your ARRT Readiness Score and stats
Your ARRT Readiness Score unlocks after 40 answered questions. It estimates your percent correct on an exam weighted like the 2027 exam, with a range:
- Purple (not yet): even the high end of your range is under 75%.
- Gold (close): your range straddles 75%. The card names the category where extra points are easiest to find.
- Green (on track): even the low end of your range clears 75%.
Recent work counts most, and each question counts once. Subcategories you haven't practiced are assumed at a neutral 60%, not at your average, so covering every subcategory both raises and tightens your range. The card shows how many subcategories have 5 or more answers.
Your Stats page shows where you stand by category, your weakest subcategories with a Practice button for each, your practice mix against the exam's, subcategory coverage, and how your scores are trending. In the coach, a focus area is a subcategory under 80% over at least 5 answers, and a strong area is 85% or better over at least 10.
How to know you're ready
- Your readiness score is green: the low end of your predicted range is 75% or higher. That's your cue to schedule your exam.
- Every category is at 75% or better in your coach report, with enough answers in each to trust it.
- You've practiced every subcategory, so there are no untested areas left in your prediction.
- You score 75% or better on timed, full-length mocks, at about a minute per question.
The readiness score is an estimate from your practice, not an official ARRT score. The ARRT reports a scaled score, and 75 passes.
Test-week tips
- Keep the last 3 days light: your review queue and one short Smart Quiz a day, then rest.
- Skim your weakest subcategories' micro lessons and formulas (15% rule, inverse square law, grid conversions) rather than starting anything new.
- Pace yourself: about a minute per question. Flag a hard one and move on after about two minutes.
- Read the stem, predict the answer, then eliminate. For “first” or priority questions, patient safety comes before image quality and paperwork.
- Bring two forms of ID with names that match your ARRT record. See the rad tech boards guide for test day and after.

Frequently asked questions
Does Rad Registry Prep cover every ARRT Radiography category and subcategory?
Yes. The question bank, quizzes, micro lessons and mock exams follow the 2027 ARRT Radiography content specifications: all four categories (Patient Care, Safety, Image Production and Procedures) and every section and subcategory inside them. This page lists each one with the number of practice questions the site has for it.
What should I do first?
Take the 20-question Smart Diagnostic from your dashboard. It samples every category, and your Smart Study Coach uses the results to find your weak areas and build custom quizzes for them.
How much should I study each day?
About 40 minutes a day follows the 30 Day Study Plan (a lesson, a quiz, review and flashcards). If you add your exam date in Settings, the coach report suggests a daily question target (between 20 and 120) that covers most of the questions you haven't seen before your exam, keeping the last 3 days light.
How do I know when I'm ready for the ARRT exam?
Your ARRT Readiness Score on the dashboard predicts your exam score with a range once you've answered 40 questions. When it turns green, even the low end of your range clears 75%. Pair that with timed, full-length mock exams at 75% or better and every category at 75% or better in your coach report. The prediction is an estimate, not an official ARRT score: the ARRT reports a scaled score, and 75 passes.
Are the mock exams weighted like the real exam?
Yes. Every mock exam is drawn to the 2027 blueprint: 72 Procedures, 51 Image Production, 46 Safety and 31 Patient Care items out of 200, split across each category's sections and subcategories. The 25, 50 and 100-question mocks scale the same blueprint down.
