Set the kVp, mAs, mA, SID and grid for real patients: a child who won't hold still, a plaster cast, ascites, emphysema. Expose, and the real radiograph comes out the way your technique would make it, with the exposure index, deviation index and the patient's dose. Then accept it or repeat it.
